Missing Hidden Files

Last week I wrote on the problems with one of my .htaccess files. This week I thought I would mention another killer problem that anyone can wind up with when dealing with this type of file.

The .htaccess file as you well know by convention are hidden files on Unix-like operating systems. In several web servers (most commonly Apache), .htaccess (hypertext access) is the default name of a directory-level configuration file that allows for decentralized management of web server configuration.

Now, I’m not the sharpest box in the pencils, but I’ve been knocking around this kinda stuff for the past 10 years. I have surely learned that one needs to back-up their file system. But …….. I’ve developed the nasty habit of wanting to visually inspect what I back-up while I back-up.

Instead of backing-up my blogs at the “public_html“, I actually go inside the “public_html” and back-up the folders and files from this point in the directory tree. Problem is that while c-panel will back-up “ALL” the files inside the folders, if the hidden files are not displayed within the public_html ………. c-panel “WILL NOT” back them up.

I never caught it because it is a file that I normally do not work with during the course of a day and the size of these files is usually very small so you don’t notice it is missing when you query the properties of the download or back-up, at the time of the back-up.

I remember years ago I had a friend who use to carry around a card with him wherever he went that had one word on it ………….THINK.

Speak Your Mind
